The helicopter hits turbulence. Desmond loses consciousness. He wakes up in 1996. In the British army. He doesn't know where he is. His consciousness jumps between time periods. No control.
Daniel Faraday, on the freighter in 2004, explains: he needs a constant. An anchor point present in both time periods. Something — or someone — that will keep him from dying. Desmond knows. His constant is Penny.

In 1996, Desmond finds Penny. She hates him. He left her. He begs her: "In eight years, I'll call you. December 24th, 2004. Give me your number." She gives it to him. On the freighter, in 2004, Desmond dials the number. Penny answers. "Desmond?" — "Penny. I love you. I've always loved you." The best episode of the series. Period.
