Richard Alpert

Richard doesn't age. Not since 1867. He arrived on the island as a slave aboard the Black Rock, a slave ship. His wife was dead. He wanted to die too.

Jacob saved him. And offered him immortality. In exchange, Richard serves as intermediary between Jacob and the Others. For more than a century. Never seeing Jacob. Never understanding the plan.

Richard guides Ben, then Locke, then Jack. Always calm. Always measured. But when Jacob dies, Richard breaks. For the first time in 150 years, he doubts. He finally ages. And discovers that's what he wanted all along.
