Opening. Two men on the beach. In front of a statue. Gigantic. Four toes. A ship on the horizon. The Black Rock. One of the men is Jacob. The other, his enemy. Nameless. "You know how badly I want to kill you." — "One day you'll find a way." They watch the ship approach.

Flashbacks. Jacob visited each of them. Kate as a child, stealing lunch. Jacob pays. Sawyer as a child, at the funeral. Jacob lends him a pen. Jack at the hospital. Jacob gives him a candy bar.
