Across the Sea

Ancient times. A pregnant woman washes ashore on the island. Another woman welcomes her. Helps her give birth. Twins. The first: Jacob. The second: nameless. The woman kills the mother. She raises the boys as her own.

She shows them the light. At the heart of the island. A cave. A golden stream. "The most beautiful light in the world. Everyone carries a little inside them. But men always want more." Her role: protect this light. Stop anyone from entering.

The boys grow up. Jacob is docile. Obedient. His brother is curious. Rebellious. He discovers the castaways on the other side of the island. He wants to leave. His "mother" refuses. He leaves anyway. He lives with the men for thirty years.

The nameless brother builds a mechanism. A wheel. To channel the water and light. And leave the island. The mother discovers it. She destroys the well. Kills the men. The brother returns to camp. Finds his mother. Kills her. In rage.

Jacob finds him. Anger. He drags his brother toward the light cave. He throws him into the stream. His brother disappears into the light. Then a pillar of black smoke emerges. The smoke monster is born. Jacob has created his own enemy.

The mother had warned: never enter the light. "It would be worse than death." Jacob places the bodies of his mother and brother side by side in a cave. Two stones. One black. One white. Adam and Eve. The skeletons Jack and Kate found in season 1. The circle is complete.
