The Candidate

The Man in Black proposes a plan. Widmore's submarine. "Get on board. Leave. I stay." Jack doesn't buy it. "You want us to leave? Why?" Sawyer wants to go. Now.

They attack the submarine. Gunfire. Frank knocks out a guard. They board. Claire is left on the dock. Kate takes a bullet in the shoulder. The submarine dives. The Man in Black remains on the dock. Smiling.

Jack opens his bag. A bomb. The C4 from the plane. The Man in Black planted it there. He can't kill them directly — the candidates are protected. But if they try to disarm it and fail, they kill themselves. The Man in Black circumvented the rule.

Sawyer pulls the wires. The bomb accelerates. Sayid looks at Jack. "It's you, Jack. It was always you." Sayid takes the bomb. He runs toward the other end of the submarine. The explosion kills him. Sayid is dead. Redeemed.

Water rushes in. The submarine sinks. Sun is trapped under debris. Jin tries to free her. Impossible. The water rises. "Go. Save yourself." Jin refuses. "I will never leave you again." They hold hands. The water covers them. Sun and Jin die together. As they lived. Together.

Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer surface. On the beach. Jack cries. Hurley too. Kate too. Sawyer collapses. The Man in Black won this round. Three dead. The submarine at the bottom of the ocean. And he didn't lift a finger.
