What They Died For

Jacob appears. Around a fire. Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer see him. For the first time. All together. Jacob is calm. Almost tender. "It's time I told you why you're here."

He explains. The smoke monster. His brother. The mistake he made. The light. "I chose people like me. Alone. Broken. Looking for something they couldn't find in their lives." Kate: "My name was crossed out." Jacob: "It's just chalk on a wall. The job is yours if you want it."

Jack stands up. "It's me." No hesitation. No doubt. "This is why I'm here. This is what I'm supposed to do." Jacob smiles. He knew. Always knew. Jacob takes water from the river. Jack drinks. The transfer is complete. Jack is the island's new guardian.

Ben, meanwhile, joins the Man in Black. Not out of conviction. Out of calculation. Richard is attacked by the monster. Thrown into the jungle. Widmore is in the barracks. The Man in Black finds him. Ben kills him. Three bullets. "He had nothing more to tell us." Ben chooses his side. Or is he pretending?

In the other reality, Desmond orchestrates the final gathering. He has Kate and Sayid freed from prison. Hurley picks them up. Desmond calls Jack. "Your Oceanic flight. Do you remember?" The pieces come together.

A concert tonight. Everyone will be there. Jack. Kate. Hurley. Sayid. Desmond. Charlie. Claire. The final awakening approaches.
