The End, Part 2

Jack, the Man in Black and Desmond reach the heart of the island. The cave of light. The golden stream. Jack and his enemy lower Desmond together. Desmond enters the light. He removes the stone cork. The light goes out. The water runs dry. The island shakes.

The Man in Black smiles. "He was right, Jack. The island is done." But something has changed. Without the light, the Man in Black is mortal. Jack punches him. They fight. On the cliff. In the rain. The Man in Black stabs Jack in the side. Kate shoots. A bullet in the back. The Man in Black falls. Jack pushes him off the cliff. He crashes on the rocks. Dead. The smoke monster exists no more.

But the island is dying too. The ground collapses. The light must return. Jack knows what he must do. He passes the torch to Hurley. "It's you, Hugo. You're the guardian." — "Jack, I can't." — "You can." Hurley drinks the water. Ben watches. "I'll be your advisor, if you'll have me." Hurley smiles. "I'd be honored."

Jack descends into the cave. Alone. He replaces the cork. The water returns. The light too. Jack collapses. The island is saved. Jack crawls toward the exit. He falls in a bamboo field. The same bamboo field where he woke after the crash. Vincent, the dog, comes to lie beside him. Jack looks at the sky. A plane passes. Frank pilots. Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Miles, Richard and Lapidus fly away. They made it out.

In the other reality — which is not an alternate reality but an afterlife — the awakenings end. Locke moves his toes after Jack's operation. He remembers. "You don't have a son, Jack." Jack touches Locke. Flash. The island. Everything. Jack resists. He's not ready.

Jack arrives at the church. His father. The coffin. He opens it. Empty. Christian Shephard appears behind him. Jack cries. "You're dead." — "Yes." — "Then I am too?" — "Yes." Everyone in this church is dead. At different times. Some before him. Some long after. Time doesn't exist here. They created this place to find each other.

Jack enters the nave. They're all there. Kate. Sawyer. Juliet. Hurley. Locke. Sun. Jin. Charlie. Claire. Sayid. Shannon. Desmond. Penny. Ben stays outside. He's not ready. Not yet. Hurley tells him: "You were a very good number two." Ben replies: "And you were a very good number one." Christian opens the doors. Light enters. They stand. They look at each other. They smile. Jack closes his eyes. On the island, in the bamboo field, Jack closes his eyes. The last image. The eye closes. As it had opened. At the very beginning. The End.
